August is winter in Argentina. In Buenos Aires winter weather is mild. Average temperatures usually range between 8°C (46°F) and 16°C (62°F). But weather can always change –some winters are colder than others. Check the weather forecast before travel.
The official currency in Argentina is the peso. Most places in Buenos Aires take cash and debit/credit cards. Tipping is not obligatory but appreciated. If you choose to tip, 10% is appropriate.
The standard voltage is 220V. Argentina primarily uses Type I plugs (two angled pins forming a “V” and a third vertical pin). Check if you need a plug converter, and that your phone, laptop, and other devices can handle this voltage. If not, you will also need to bring a voltage converter to prevent damage to your device.
Before You Travel
Buenos Aires has two airports.
Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. This airport is in the city of Buenos Aires. Domestic flights and some flights from South American countries, especially from Brazil, arrive here. To go to your hotel or accommodation, you can get a taxi (there’s a taxi stop outside the domestic arrival gate where you can fix the price using a QR) or take an Uber, Cabify, or DiDi.
Aeropuerto Internacional Ministro Pistarini – Ezeiza. This is the international airport, where most international flights arrive. It’s located in Ezeiza, on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, at about 40 minutes to one hour by car. To get to the city, the options are a bus shuttle called Tienda León, that will take you to the city center (Terminal Pellegrini), a private transfer (there are several companies that you will see on arrival), or take an Uber, Cabify, or DiDi.
How to Get to Buenos Aires
Buenos Aires is a big city, but it’s not so difficult to move around.
There are 6 subway lines (here’s the map), a vast bus network, and 5 train lines. To learn how to get from one point to another in the city, you can use Google Maps, which will give you accurate options.
There are different ways to pay the subway and the bus fare: the SUBE card (you can buy it in some subway and train stations, and you’ll have to charge it with cash), or directly with credit or debit card. To ride the train, you will need a SUBE card.
You can also take a taxi (you can stop them anywhere on the streets). They usually take cash only; you can pay sometimes with a credit card, but you’ll have to ask the taxi driver in advance.
You can book an Uber, Cabify, or Didi. These apps work well in Buenos Aires, and sometimes are the easiest way to move around.
How to Get to the Paco Urondo Cultural Center
The Paco Urondo Cultural Center is located downtown at 201 25 de Mayo Street—two blocks away from the Plaza de Mayo. This Cultural Center is part of the Facultad de Filosofía y Letras of the University of Buenos Aires (usually known as UBA). Some of the research institutes of the college are located here, among them the Institute of Linguistics.
There are many bus lines that can get you there, and 4 subway lines (A, B, D, E) have stations that are a few blocks away.
